Somehow, it's been weeks since he'd almost died in that Arceus-forsaken cave system underneath of the Silent Icelands. Somehow, he's still alive, chugging along like a freight train on its last gallon of fuel. And somehow, he's here, at the house of Greyson Connors.[break][break]
His hand is raised, hovering over the door as if frozen. He rehearses the words he'd been planning to say, letting them slide across his lips with a whispered weariness. In the end, he won't say any of them. He'll just stare at Greyson in troubled hues of blue and ask, "Are you okay?"[break][break]
And he won't be okay. Caleb's sure of that. He knows it like he knows the back of his own hand. He knows it like he knows the contours of his own heart. He knows because he's been where Greyson's been, the same dark pit, only nobody had been there to drag him out of it. He'd descended further and further until he'd signed his soul away in blood, allowed the demons of Kanto to tear him limb from limb, redemption slipping through the cracks - like trying to hold light in the palm of one's hand: impossible.[break][break]
He knocks.

Greyson's torn from his subconcious at the sound of Caleb's knock. Disoriented and confused, it took another round of knocks before he remembered where he was. With a grunt he stands, catching himself on the couch's cushion as his balance shifts as Greyson nearly tumbles.

"I heard you the first time," he yells to the front-door. Who the hell was disturbing him out of the blue? His social circle had been remarkably small as of late.

Grabbing the towel that hangs off the bathroom door, he wipes the sweat from his face and neck. He does his best to ignore the cold chill running up and down his back. Tossing it to the side, Greyson opens the door.

"What do you wa-" His words are cut short as sheer disbelief consumes them. "Caleb Harcourt? How the hell did you get my address?"

A familiar cadence pulses in his blood. TAnger and all the familiarity that came with it.

Oh, he does look like shit.[break][break]
Bags under his eyes, purpled and bruised. Hair mussed, a few strands plastered to his forehead. Pale and clammy, like he'd seen a ghost. Hands shaking, movements unstable: a gentle breeze could blow him right over.[break][break]
Caleb knows these signs. It's like looking in a mirror and seeing himself from five years ago staring back.[break][break]
He doesn't reek of alcohol, at least.[break][break]
"I got it from Freya," Caleb tells him truthfully, keeping his voice calm. "I've been looking for you, but you haven't been at your office."[break][break]
He can see the anger etched along Greyson's clenched jaw, but he does not shy away from it.[break][break]
"Can I come in?"

"Freya." The name drops with a mixture of disdain and disbelief. Was it revenge for how he'd acted at the Chasm? How petty of the councilwoman. How very Matias of her.

"No. Fingers wrapped around the door's frame slammed it shut.

Or it tried too.

A violet hue fills the door and Greyson looks back at his Delphox in shock. What was she doing?

With gritted teeth he opens the door wider.

"Five minutes."

"Yeah, freya morningstar. The Councilwoman." He hears the bitterness, the vitriol, the resentment. He gets it, he does. But it won't do Greyson any good, and Caleb's faced far worse than this. He's faced himself. "We've both been worried about you."[break][break]
Greyson slams the door in his face.[break][break]
Except he doesn't. He wants to - he definitely wants to - but he can't, because a psychic force keeps it open. Caleb pokes his head inside, sees the Delphox standing stoically in the background, paw raised. Caleb nods to her in thanks, then slips through the doorway, entering to find Greyson's home dim and unkept and saturated with an overwhelming aura of neglect.[break][break]
They stand in awkward silence, Greyson's glare sharp enough to cut through flesh.[break][break]
"Look. I just wanted to check up on you. Make sure you're okay." He runs his hand through his hair, fighting the urge to look away from the intensity of the other man's stare. "After what happened with those Rockets, in Area Zero, I thought you might be..." Anxious? Suffering? Drowning in self-loathing? "...having a hard time."[break][break]
You almost killed someone.

"A hard time?" He echoes, expression incredulous, voice oozing with the remnants of an anger that's not entirely to blame on Caleb; nevertheless it's focused on the other man like light through an hourglass.

"Do I look like I'm having a hard time?" Before Caleb can so much as speak a word, Greyson interjects. "Rhetorical."

Like a freight train Caleb's first sentence hits him. He flexes the muscles of his jaw, teeth grinding.

"I don't need anyone's concern. Got it? Certainly not yours."

Caleb isn't phased by the anger. He knows it's misdirected, but he also knows it's important to allow Greyson this moment of catharsis. Better him than someone who wouldn't understand...who would take it more personally, or worse, retaliate.[break][break]
"Sorry to disappoint, but you don't get to choose who cares about you."[break][break]
He folds his arms - firm, but still calm - acutely aware that the Delphox is still in the room, watching him with pinpricks of molten red-gold. She may have allowed this, but she's Greyson's companion, and she will make quick work of Caleb should he become a threat.[break][break]
Even a wrongly-accused one.[break][break]
"I know you probably think I'm incapable of empathy because of my past - and it's that exact sort of bias that does, often, make me want to punch your lights out instead of talk to you - BUT." He pauses to suck in a breath. Still, his patience perseveres; still, he approaches this from the high ground. "But, I can empathize with what you're going through. I really can."[break][break]
Trauma has a way of sticking to the soul.[break][break]
"Apathy is easy," he murmurs, softly now. "Giving up is easy."[break][break]
Every day he fights it, the shadow that strides behind him, the constant reminder of the sins he's committed. How simple it would be to take another drink, to numb the pain, to make himself useless again.[break][break]
"But the world is better off with you in it, fighting for it. Trust me on this."

"Fuck you." He says, words laced with vitrol. He steps into Caleb's space, one finger jagging the other man's chest, it's subtle shake betraying the truth of Caleb's words.

He didn't need to be lectured on apathy. On any of this.

"I did what anyone would've done." At the very least MATIAS SILPH and people would clamor over themselves just to catch one of his dead stares.

"I don't regret it."

The lie tasted like vinegar, but he swallows it down.

"And what of you? What happened after that cave in? The accusation in his tone is cutting.

The hand that jabs his chest is shaking. The tremors are subtle, but they betray Greyson's lies all the same.[break][break]
"What are you so afraid of? Appearing weak?" He asks calmly, ignoring the insults. If Greyson wanted a heated argument, a reason to kick him out, he wouldn't get one. "You want so badly for me to believe you'd really have killed her."[break][break]
He shakes his head, but it isn't disgust that colors his expression: it's pity.[break][break]
"Murdering someone in cold blood - even someone you think deserves it - doesn't make a man strong. Doesn't make him brave."[break][break]
The accusations come, and Caleb knows what Greyson's getting at. He could have predicted it. Traitor, the other man labels him with every prying question.[break][break]
"I ran, same as you. Then you abandoned me, so I had to find my own way out of that cursed chasm."[break][break]
During the cave-in, Caleb had exchanged words with BARNABY FINCH. But Greyson hadn't asked him about that, not explicitly.

"I would have killed her!" His voice cracks halfway in as emotion bleeds through.

Rage and anguish bleed into one and the veins in his neck and temple throb against the rising tempo of his heartbeat.

"I don't need to be brave. I d-d-don't need to be strong." He stumbles over his words as thoughts come racing faster and faster.

"I did my job. I. Did. My. Job." His finger stabs with each enunciation, accusations forgotten temporarily.

"I'm not like you. I'm better."

Which each stammered rebuttal, Greyson reduces himself, makes himself small in the face of his own helpless uncertainty. It is a pathetic display of bravado. Caleb is familiar with the tactic, though he'd spent less time at this stage - moving more swiftly than Greyson into dejected self-hate.[break][break]
"You did your job?"[break][break]
He shakes his head, scoffing at the absurdity of the claim.[break][break]
"Your job is to be a role model for the citizens of Hoenn. Your job is to provide an educational and challenging training opportunity by allowing the most qualified Pokemon battlers to enter your arena. Your job is to advise the League council, and help guide our government towards a safer future."[break][break]
Caleb steps into Greyson's outstretched hand, lets his accusatory finger poke him in the chest.[break][break]
"You're right. You are better than me. But not because you would have killed a Rocket."[break][break]
His eyes are compassionate, even as he shoulders yet another would-be ally's misplaced anger.[break][break]
"You're better because you didn't."

Little by little his mental state crumbles. Cracks splinter coherent thought, but where they appear, something else must fill the gap.

Anger.

Greyson embraces his SYGNA SUIT. It's done so quickly, so naturally, and without thought, that even the Delphox is taken back. With a flex of his Will, a PSYCHIC coated fist smashes into the kitchen island and it shatters at the impact.

Pain shoots up his fist, and arm, but none of it matters. His words are the cold and ice of a void.

"Do not tell me what my job is." This turncoat didn't have a clue what it meant to be a member of the Elite Four — the burden and sacrifice it required was far beyond the comprehension of someone so selfish.

"Get out."

All around Greyson reality begins to warp beneath unchecked emotions.

Rage ripples outwards from Greyson Connors and Caleb finally, reluctantly, takes a step backwards. Psychic power cuts through granite like butter, and the kitchen island is reduced to rubble in a matter of seconds. Caleb gapes at it, thinking what the actual fuck, while at the same time, anger begins to rise within his own gut - hot enough to burn away the remnants of his patience.[break][break]
"You'd let him abuse your power like this?" He turns on the Delphox, immediately recognizing that the emotion etched across her canine features is one of surprise. "He needs help!"[break][break]
The air shimmers, and Caleb's skin prickles, goosebumps rising. Greyson's eyes have an otherworldly amethyst cast to them now, unnerving and inhuman. Were Sygna Suits really capable of this?[break][break]
There's a sizable amount of space between the two men, but Caleb does not retreat further. Not yet.[break][break]
"I'm not afraid of you," he snaps at Greyson. He'd fought Zev Harcourt, after all, and there were few people who would ever come close to that degree of unhinged violence.[break][break]
Stubbornly, he clings to his belief in Greyson. Stubbornly, he pushes harder against the unseen barrier erected between them.[break][break]
"You wanna kill someone? Kill me, then. You hate me enough, right?"[break][break]
Willing to suffer to call a bluff? Willing to die to prove a point? It would make him a hell of a martyr, but he doesn't care. He's tired of Greyson's self-destructive bullshit, and he isn't going to leave without putting up a fight.

This power. How easy it was to snap Caleb's neck. The thought floats around his head, and instinctually he knows it would take a fraction of effort.

Greyson lifts his hand, amethyst hues intensifying under the weight of borrowed power. Just a fraction and-

The power fades. No, it doesn't fade, it's ripped from him. He whirls on the Delphox, face morphing into shock, before she snaps her finger.

Greyson's eyes roll into the back of his head and he falls into a heap on the floor.

Delphox, now glowing with the same violet light, turns a narrowed gaze onto Caleb.

Before the man could so much as question this new status quo he's lifted under psychic energy, the door behind him gently opening, and deposited on the stoop.

In a flash of annoyance, the door slams. Beneath it, shadows dance as her power fills the room. Her anger resonated in Caleb's mind and it was bitter.

Whatever fate awaited Greyson, Caleb would know it would be more than he deserved.

Perhaps he would learn better next time to keep his temper in check.
